just about all library routines youll need are
documented (possibly not well documented)...

this is a FAQ, i dont know if this is the most correct
answer, but it certainly seems reasonable...
yeah you could do that... or stat the file...
technically the important thing though isnt to test if
open failed, but if/when it does fail check the value of
errno... i just counted 14 different reasons open()
might fail according to the man page...
