MTA:  Mail transport agent (such as sendmail, smail, MS Exchange) -- the
server piece used to exchange mail with other MTAs over a network.

MUA:  Mail user agent (such as Pine, Elm, Exchange Client, ... ) -- the
client piece used by a user to receive and send mail.

Normally there is also a local delivery agent that the MTA talks to,
such as deliver, procmail, etc.

Yes, a lexicon might be helpful if folks start using acronyms.
