Hi,
maybe you'll have to insert a ChipId / ChipRev line in XF86Config.
Some of the ATI Rage cards need this (including mine)
I think I read about this in a FAQ. Maybe on XFree86.org ?
Sorry can't be more specific at the moment.

Hi all
I have a graphic card ATI 3D RAGE II+DVD. - 4MB
I am tring to install X on my computer (AMD K6-200Khz 64MB -PCI )
This is not my firs install, I previously had linux on my old 486 and
all was OK.
After all i tried, when i run startx, xinit, X .... all I get is a blank
screen. the LCD on my screen reports that the screen is in graphic mode.
nothing can kill the X (no ctrl-alt-backspace) but boot by ctrl-alt-del
still works and kills my machin slowly but OK.
I noticed that the clocks that my card has are verry restricted - only
some 4 clock decribed in bios, the same reported in README.ati file as
bios default clocks option 3.
Does any one experienced this kind of problems?
10x
