That should get you started...  There's an active beowulf list hosted
out of cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov, as well.

Red Hat has information on Extreme Linux, which is the "stuff" Goddard
used for Beowulf.

Essentially, you take an isolated pile-o-PCs and load Linux.  Add PVM
and/or LAM/MPICH for message passing.  Connect with 10BaseT, 100BaseT,
Gigabit ethernet, ATM or Myranet.  Switches work MUCH better than
hubs...  Repeat this as a mantra... Switches work better than hubs...

Once everything is configured, launch the PVM daemon on the central
machine.  Launch a test application or 2.

Launch your favorite application with parallel support and see how it
does.

That's about it.
