Thanks guys:

        My floppy cable was backwards.  Now, the light turns on when the
floppy is being mounted, written, or read, as it should.  I tried chmod
777 /dev/fd* and it worked.  I just made my boot disk.

        My ASUS AGP V-3400 TNT TV video card is not supported by the X
that I have so I'll just get 3.3.3.1 and take it from there.

        I tried a program call mousetest.  It placed a white rectangle in
the top left corner but I couldn't get it to move with my mouse.  I hit
cntl-c and my screen turned to crap.  I had to reboot.  I couldn't see
what I was typing but it rebooted fine.
