        In general you can't.  A distribution is like an option package
on a car.  Unless the distribution included some marker (LE above
the right brake light), you can only guess.  Further, the owner has
probably added packages not in the original distribution.

        Most distributions are characterized by their package handler.

        Slackware               - pkgtool
        Debian          - deity
        Red Hat         - rpm

        If you find any of these on your box, it was almost certainly
(>99.9%) the corresponding distribution.
