Just a thought,
In the hard-disk case the disk operations is speeded up with the disk/buffer 
cache. Is the buffer cache active for ram-disks? If not you get a lot of 
memcopy to/from the ram-disk. In any case you get less ram for the buffer 
cache to grow in.
