First, this doesn't sound like the same problem.
Since you seem to be able to print with the control panel.
I have to admit, that I am currently using SuSe.
If you really tried to do a cat >> /dev/lp it didn't work because you would
have to use /dev/lp0 or /dev/lp1. ( But may be you really used lp0 ? )
Next thing would be to check your /etc/printcap file.
What's your default printer there? To which port does it print?...
