kernel compile question

I had Red Hat 5.1 running very smoothly (ethernet card working and modem and
dial up networking) then I recompiled the kernel to add the stuff to do IP
Masqurading and now I cannot get my network card to work and dialup
networking will not work the modem will not dial.  I know my modem is setup
right but how do I load the ppp module into the kernel in order to get my
dial up networking to work?
