Daryoush:

If you are new to RedHat, you might find it easier setting up from a CD
rather than downloading it all yourself. You can get the Boxed set from Red
Hat or other dealers like CheapBytes. You can also get the CDs without the
commercial stuff from CheapBytes for a few dollars. This is what you would
download yourself but it is well worth the few dollars to have it done for
you and put on a CD. In addition, I keep seeing the boxed set in bookshops
and computer stores. So if you have a few extra bucks I would recommend
that you get one of these. You can always upgrade from the net later. When
you buy the boxed set, in addition to some commercial stuff, you get the
documentation in hard copy. For someone setting up for the first time, this
is helpful.

As to your second question about the rpm extension. Red Hat developed the
Redhat Package Management system. Many other distributors are using this
now (SuSE and Caldera, for example). the rpm extension at the end of the
file indicates that the application is packaged with the RPM system. There
are several advantages to using the rpm system, particularly for the
neophyte. The most important, I think, is that you don't have to worry
about missing dependencies. The rpm will keep track of all the other
files/programs you need to install and run the application and alert you if
something is missing. The rpm system also makes it easier to upgrade your
applications and the entire Linux platform.

This is from one redhat neophyte to another. I hope this was helpful.

Derrick.
