I have used Slackware 3.x, RedHat 5.x, and Debian ?.x,
Slackware 3.x - best for power user, my preference for home
++maintainable (with opt_depot, or other package management
system)
+expandable, default search paths (libary, command, etc.)
are simple, well-documented, and easy to add to
-hardest to install, included packagement management (pkgtool)
is reliable but unfeatured
-configurable, the expandability comes with the price tag
of many required configuration decisions
RedHat 5.x - best for business user, my preference for work
++secure, package management system provides and maintains
reliable configuration
+expandable, many packages are already bundled to use the
features of their package management system,
other packages can be added
+straightforward to install, the package management system
supports safe defaults
-hard to customize, packages not already bundled are tolerated
but extra effort is required for installation and
maintenance
Debian ?.x - best for demo installation, disrecommended
+easiest to install, from cd to demo system in 30min.
-impossible to customize, the package management system
does not tolerate non-debianized packages
-impossible to expand, the package management system does
not tolerate non-debianized packages
--insecure, requires granting superuser privelege to untrusted
scripts for installation
Suse ?.x - no experience
Opinionated,
