FWIW here's my work machine:

Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda3 54441 19374 32256 38% /
/dev/hda5 1981000 1225437 653151 65% /usr
/dev/hda6 995115 693984 249725 74% /opt
/dev/hda7 101075 25927 69929 27% /var
/dev/hda9 653034 284496 334804 46% /mnt/hda9
/dev/sda1 2028098 1513566 409710 79% /home

Where hda8 is a "spare" 1GB partition, hda9 is for making CD images, and
hda10 is a 1GB partition with Mandrake 5.3 on it. I also have 2 x 128MB
swap partitions (hda1 + hda2).

My home machine is just one big partition. If it breaks, big deal.
