Perharps, when new kernel was compiled, its configuration was set up wrongly.
The ".config" file should contain:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y
otherwise the kernel cannot detect hard disk just because it is not specified.
The 'Kernel panic' message is the result of that.
If so, to fix, just reconfigure
make config
type 'yes' for the above prompt, and compile again.
