The hwclock utility works to reset the hardware clock to the system time on 
RedHat 6 - my thanks to those who pointed it out.

Robert I think your problem might be more related to the configuration of 
your mail clients which probably have the wrong timezone setting and 
therefore get the time wrong - trying checking the clients configuration 
and what TZ value your system has. Date can show both local and GMT time
