A few months ago, when many purchased 9GB drives there
was a large volume of traffic regarding various intermittent
problems. (I have a Seagate Barracuda 9GB with Adapetec
2949/U2W.) Most (including myself) reported a successful
workaround (not cure). The 9GB drives involved were rated as
80Mb/s (40 Mw/s) SCSI burst rate and are probably the same
hardware sold under different brands. The rating appears to
be inaccurate. Seagate has not responded to any inquiries.
The workaround is to lower the burst rate in the Adaptec
SCSI bios.
After several months, my memory of the procedure is
uncertain. When you power up your machine, be prepared to hit
the indicated key (F5?) during the short (~2s) window. In the
SCSI bios setup, select performance(?) settings to bring up
a matrix of device number vs limits. Move the cursor to the
burst speed limit in the column for the hard drive. Select the
next slower speed (57.2 Mb/s?).
Though this may be unrelated, it accounted for most
problems reported.
