just a curiosity on this, I am running redhat so it may not be 
relevant, but my umount is not suid root but I have no problems, it 
really should not matter since the scripts that call it run as root 
no?

(in fact my umount is mode 550 since I dont want users messing with 
filesystems, but I have never had system problems as a result of that)
