I'm sorry, it seemed I expressed myself a bit wrong, but
nevertheless I got some very good and interesting answers.

I didn't know about dd's  nseek= option (which is very useful vor me).

In fact, I want to truncate (excuse me, I'm German, I didn't 
know that word ;-). Cutting away the pregap from the end of a
CD-image, for example. I now received a perl skript (thanx A mole)
which does the job.
