these are the ways u could solve your problem :

1) u could read the PPP+Minicom Howto 

2) as mentioned in other mails use RH GUI software (or) wvdial (or)
pppconfig which is highly recommended

the idea however is to start pppd and "detach" it to the background
thereby maintaining the link.....
