I don't know Caldera at all, but Slackware and RedHat both have runlevel
3 as normal multiuser console: they don't even try to start X. You can
run X at runlevel 3, but you have to do it yourself. Either you have
made a typo for runlevel 5, or Caldera is very wierd indeed.

essentially, no. There is no standard X server that will run without
an XF86Config file that has settings that are valid for it. Maybe SVGA,
if you will be cotent with 320x200. You still have to link in the right
X server. Here is an evasive maneuver:

boot, and when you see LILO, hit a shift key to get its attention. It
should respond
boot:

You can hit tab or ? to see what it knows how to boot. Probably linux,
but the name may be changed to protect the guilty.
I will call it linux, for simplicity. On my box it is 38threads,
37threads, threads, maybe, dose, and rescue.
linux <runlevel>
should start <runlevel>

                        Slackware RedHat Caldera
multiuser, no network 2 2 ?
multiuser, network 3 3 ?
multiuser, X 4 5 ?
spare (same as 3) 5 4 ?

linux 1, linux single, or linux S
_should_ start a single user console login.

Failing that,

linux init=/bin/sh

should get you a shell. If that doesn't work, you could try:
linux init=[/usr][/local]/bin/[sh|ash|bash|csh|tksh|pdksh]

<From any shell, you can run xf86config. Tell it the truth about hour
video hardware, and it will make you a workable XF86Config.

I wouldn't try to boot into X until I had run a healthy-looking
X --probeonly and run X successfully from a console with startx or
xinit, but you are the system administrator.

No. That is the INPUT file to rpm. try ls /usr/src and see what you
find. You might very well find redhat. If you find caldera, see if it
has RPMS.

This mail client runs on Wine. Your mileage may vary.
