Laptop Woes

Anyone have any idea how to get X up on a Compaq Presario 1930?

I've gotten the latest Xfree86(3.3.6) and It keeps fritzing everything on
me.  

I would be happy if I could even get 640x480, at this point.

XF86Setup runs fine, so how do I get the same setup that Xf86Setup runs?

Linux laptop How-to, XF86 Home page....been there...done that.
