There is a kernel limit on this.  On the 2.0.x kernels, you had 3gig
total, only a little less than a gig could be physical memory.  Otherwise,
the kernel would hang.  They fixed this with the 2.2 kernel, but I don't
know about 2gig.  You might look at the 2.3 kernel though.
