the only reliable way of checking whether or not an
email address is valid is by sending an email to it
and getting a response that isn't a bounce.
likewise there's no "formal" way of validating an
email address. to wit, these are all valid email
addresses that could exist on a server:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
to get a sense of the complexity of this task, take
a look at the regular expression for matching an email
address in Appendix B of "Mastering Regular Expressions"
