Very strange. My esperience with sndconfig is that it has never
failed to find the correct irq/dma/io settings for any card that can
actually find a driver for, and then put the necessary magic spells
into /etc/conf.modules - after which it all works very nicely.

Do "/sbin/lsmod" to see if the driver modules are loaded correctly.

Try running aumix to turn up the mixer volume so that you can
actually hear it.

But perhaps the driver that sndconfig is choosing for you isn't the
right one for your card... sorta like, "close, but no cigar" :)

Good luck.

BTW, why not pay the $us20 or so for the commercial drivers? Very
cheap, excellent value for money if they work with your card, and
the money is going to a company that has contributed considerably to
the functionality of linux. (I've done this in the past, but not
since I upgraded my hardware with a sound card which had
well-supported kernel driver).

Cheers
