Despite your very detailed account, I didn't understand one thing. Does
the firewall have multiple NICs or are you using aliases? In any case, I
don't think unmodified redhat scripts account for a second IP address.

I think this oddity is what you should investigate. This is where you
problem probably lies.

No, I can assure you it has nothing to do with that. The only thing that
does, for now, is change some optimization code network drivers use.
Have a look at the help screen for this topic on `make menuconfig`.
