I don't think I will be able to give a definite pointer to the problem...but
this might help.

The linux kernel that you compile can be in two forms ... the smaller form
is the one that you use when not using extended memory ...in the larger
form, like the one we nowadays have is partly loaded into extended memory..
I don't know this for certain...but I vaguely remember reading this
somewhere...U probably are using the wrong type of kernel ...but i could be
wrong...

While installing a new kernel image I got an error -
kernel image too big.     The image that I have been
using is 527775 bytes and the new image
that gives this error is 491228 bytes. The lilo doc
says
the error could occur if the kernel image is damaged
or if
it contains trailing junk.
I compiled it twice just to make sure.

It says try making bzimage. It may work but the
wholething doesnt make sense.

What is the problem ?
