basically vmware sets up whatever mouse you have as a ps/2 mouse. so wether
you have a serial or a ps/2 mouse under your guest os (i.e. linux in this
case).

i hav only used vmware with linux as the host os. and i am very happy with
this config. in fact my win98 os is now set up to use either my machine
natively or under vmware. this makes life real easy. also i end up using
less hdd. so i prefer to use wmware this way. also all my work is done under
linux. i only use win under vmware to test web pages under netscape/ie and
to use front page express. so in my case win is not resourse hungry. i use
my linux box to run apache/jserv/servletexec/mysql and any other server
programs that i may need. so this explains why i use vmware with linux as
the host os. if u need to use your win box as a host or if u need some heavy
app under windows then vmware with windows as a host machine makes sense.
also in either case u can run the same os as your host os inside vmware to
do things like networking and client/server computing.
