Many thanks to Christian Hamacher and Wayne Love for your advice. You were right about my 'symptom' - in fact the ISP finally pulled their finger out today and we're back up and working OK. As a by-the-by - I've since put a really useful tool on the system and my own W95 box - dialmon - available from www.quaking.demon.co.uk ( There was even a pointer to an rpm for RedHat). It is a monitor and control program ( for Linux or windows) that saves having to run the Linux version under X ). I'm impressed !
