Do a ping  to an outside site like:

ping   www.oracle.com

if you get the packet returned that means the connection is available. 
Make sure  you have proper  DNS servers to do the name resolution. 
Otherwise you can supply the IP address to a site, in that case you need 
not bother about the DNS servers.
