Second in on this one.
I read comp.lang.tcl and comp.lang.perl.misc and these groups have heavy
traffic. There are always net.police in any group directing newbies to
the FAQ's. The advantage of a mailing list is that you can kick out people
spamming the group. Dejanews is a good thing, but just like any search engine:
crap in crap out. You need to know what to search for. 
Use of mailing lists for developers to exchange information is a good way of
keeping beta-testers updated on what happens. The info from the beta testers go
back to the mailing list to give feedback to the developers. USENET tend to be
unpredictable in regarding to delivery times and are better suited for general
questions, opinions and so on. Mail is thought to be quicker and more reliable.

I'll try to have my ISP feed the linux.* hierarchy.
