I believe that is true.  SLIP uses 'remote resend', ie a corrupt packet is
resent from the remote server which may be far far away.  PPP resends only
from the remote modem.  I believe SLIP is typically 2% faster on a perfect
serial line.  In the real world PPP is faster (and more configurable and
easier to setup).

SLIP is fine for dedicated local serial lines 9and probably preferable for
them).
