This is wrong. The connect script is used to establish the
physical link. It should *not* start pppd. It should just
dial and do whatever is necessary to login and start the
*remote* pppd.

This is wrong. With diald managing the link you use the defaultroute
option in diald's config. You should *not* specify it in pppd's
config.
