Just to let everyone know what the solution to my problem was.
The ISDN TA was an External US Robotics Sportster, and it seems to not want
to work correctly with Linux
I have now replaced it with a Hayes 128K external TA and all is fine (don't
you just love suppliers who will change products at the drop of a hat *grin*)
