Looking at the messages on this mailing list over the last several weeks,
it appears that the problem of diald dropping initial connections is being
experienced by a number of people. Several things seem to be common to the
problem:
1. Connections made through ppp, with diald not running, do not exhibit the
"disconnect and redial" sydrome.
2. The problem appears in establishing initial links.
3. Chat debug messages indicate several causes; these include SIGHUP
signal, pap-secrets problems ("username" and "name" may not be handled
correctly).
Of the above, 1. is the most important because it indicates that some
systems that correctly handle link connection using ppp (no diald), may
have problems when diald is the initiator. Yet, diald uses pppd.
I feel that the ability to get to the bottom of this issue requires a
better understanding of just how diald and pppd interact, and I have not
found such a description. If anyone knows of such a description, please let
me know. Hopefully future versions of diald will better isolate diald and
ppp options and/or provide better setup instructions to reduce possible
pppd and diald option conflicts.
