Not an answer to your question, just confirmation of the problem.
On an older Mac using system 7.1 I have a similar problem. My Linux
boxes share a phone jack with it. If the Mac is left on after someone
uses online services, after a ramdom number of hours it will try to make
a connection to the isp.
It's a real pain in the a** when you've got a big download going, and it
bumps you off line.
I would love to here why this is.
