Not really unnecessarily:
1) since the local named will cache results from previous queries, it will
save some bandwith
2) having configured it as authoritative for the local domain, will avoid
dialing unnecessarily on bogus dns request coming from windows machines (if
you have any in your network)
3) if you ever switch provider there's no need to go and change the dns
configuration of all the machines in your network, just change the setup of
the box running named (if you use my setup - a forwarding only nameserver. If
you setup a caching named referencing the root name servers you don't even
need to change settings anywhere)

In recent kernels (2.0.32?) the patch is already included, you just need to
activate it (just check if you already have the file
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr. I thought I put a note in the web page about
that).
Of course you won't need to activate it if you have a static IP address (lucky
you!)

Bye
