Are you using an ISDN line + ipppd?

I had the same problem setting up diald with ISDN line over here and the
problem was that I was receiving the first packet from the net. You could
use the "debug" option of diald and put all debug on (17).

I solved my problem by adding a delay in the connect script so it gives
enough time for the line to be established and then diald can monitor the
new line instead of the old one (which I think it is doing currently).

Hope this helps.

Hi again,
First of all I have to thank you all for yor help. Diald id now working
_almost_ fine.
Here is the _almost_ :
Just guess I start up an email client (Eudora) in any of the windows
machines, and diald reacts accordingly by dialing my ISP. Good so far. The
problem comes now. Please note the (short) log below.
Jun 1 10:11:22 tanis diald[377]: Running connect (pid = 428).
Jun 1 10:11:49 tanis diald[377]: Running pppd (pid = 437).
Jun 1 10:11:49 tanis pppd[437]: Using interface ppp0
Jun  1 10:11:49 tanis pppd[437]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua1
Jun 1 10:11:53 tanis pppd[437]: Remote message: Login ok
Jun 1 10:11:53 tanis pppd[437]: local IP address 195.57.0.91
Jun 1 10:11:53 tanis pppd[437]: remote IP address 195.57.0.4
>>>>Jun 1 10:11:54 tanis diald[377]: New addresses: local 195.57.0.91,
remote 195.57.0.4.
>>>>Jun 1 10:13:00 tanis diald[377]: Closing down idle link.
Jun 1 10:13:01 tanis pppd[437]: Terminating on signal 2.
Jun 1 10:13:01 tanis pppd[437]: Connection terminated.
Jun 1 10:13:01 tanis pppd[437]: Exit.
According to the log, the link was idle for more than 1 minute and the
connection was closed. However this is not true, because the email client
was active. In fact the email client 'launched' diald.
If I stop the email client and restart it again, once diald is up,
everything is fine and I receive the mail. The problem is not only with the
email client, but also with ftp clients and browsers.
There seems to be something with sending/receiving/forwarding the very
first packets, or so, but I an unable to fix the problem. Any ideas?
More info:
All windows clients are configured to use the linux box as a gateway.
Linux distribution is RedHat 4.2 Kernel 2.0.30
The private network addresses are 192.168.0.x (x=1 is the linux machine,
and there are five clients from 2 to 6).
IP masquerading is set up as follows:
ipfwadm -F -a accept -m -S 192.168.0.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
ipfwadm -F -p deny
