Yup, sounds like DNS like you said.  I believe the problem is that your
clients are using external DNS.  If they're linux systems, a quick fix is
to add all the machines in your network to the /etc/hosts on each of the
clients.  There's a similar ../etc/hosts file for winnt.  I don't know
about other OSs but you may be forced to run named on your server which
opens up another whole can of worms, but in the end is the best solution.
