Do you increase the version number? e.g. In my zonefile:

;
; Zone file for my_domain.com
;
@  IN      SOA     inet.myrica.com.  postmaster.my_domain.com. (
                     23      ; Serial Number - VERY IMPORTANT!
                     28800   ; Refresh
                     7200    ; Retry
                     3600000 ; Expire
                     86400 ) ; Minimum

You must increase the serial number every time you make changes to
the zone. Likewise for the reverse zone. Some prefer to use the date
as the serial number. I think I'm also right in saying that the
serial number must never be decreased.

When you've made changes and saved the new zone file, do an ndc
reload to reload the database. If you haven't got ndc on your system,
do a kill -HUP <named_pid>. It's quicker to reload the database than
restart named.
