Hello,
I've read several posts lately that run along the lines "whenever I do X
and/or every X minutes, diald dials my ISP even though I don't need/want it
to". I haven't seen anyone reply publicly to the list with an answer, so
even here goes...
If you are not running Samba, do so, even if you don't want to share files.
In addition to its main purpose (sharing files), Samba also provides a WINS
server. Make sure this line is in your /etc/smb.conf (it was commented out
in my RedHat 5.1 RPM):
wins support = yes
Make sure your Win9x machines are set up to reference your Unix box by going
to the Networking control panel, selecting TCP/IP properties, click the WINS
tab, and enter your Unix machine's IP address. Reboot, and everything should
be okay.
BTW, I got this tip from the excellent post archived at:
http://www.lugs.ch/Linux/Mail_Diald/2393.html
Enjoy!
