I am not surprised Diald is not working on your machine. The reason is that
you've installed it from an RPM which was probably not designed for RH5.2.
Could it have been Debian RPM? Why don't you download the source, the patch
and start fresh? And, dump an error log to my email. I will look at it when
I have time. Do not guarantee a fast reply though 'cause I've got to get
that fax server to work.
