Modem Speaker

Hello,  
        I'm tryin to torn off the modem speaker
Normally i would issue ATM0 to do this somewhere in the script
I'm using the connect script that came with the package 
I've have tried putting that command in various places but i either get no
sound and a timeout while logging in or it ignores the command totally. has
anyone had succes with this?
