I guess the issue is that applying patch 4 and then patch 5
wouldn't work.  Patch 4 and 5 were both relative to the 0.16
original release.  Usually patch N is relative to patch N-1, but
in this case patch N was relative to "patch 0".  Patch 4 (and
earlier patches) had to be deleted to avoid confusion in this
respect. 

Real Moral: make each patch relative to the previous patched
version.
