This is yet another one of THOSE :-)

I had one problem with this, and found that xntpd was dialing out. To fix this, I
replaced the timeserver names in /etc/xntpd.conf with IP addresses.

I had another problem with sendmail. I solved that by killing sendmail - or so I
thought.

However, it seems that it keeps getting triggered, and it keeps trying to do a reverse
lookup on three IP addresses - two are my two diald remote links (useless as they are
overwritten by dynamic IP assignments) and one is my send ethernet card (which at this
moment has nothing connected to it). The mail logs report that a "gethostbyname"
failed on these three IP addresses in trying to send something to "faxadmin"
(presumably from my mgetty+sendfax implementation).

Here is my configuration:

Red Hat Linux 4.2 with 2.0.35 kernel (tried to convert to Red Hat 5.1, but that is
another can of WORMS)
Cyrix 4DX2-66
diald 16.4
Two copies of diald running, both on the same modem - as well as a mgetty+sendfax
(not as bad as it sounds; they all use /var/lock/....)
One copy accepts (basically) all IP destinations and has the nameserver on the other
end (at my ISP)
One copy accepts only a private net for my workplace

The copy which is going up all the time is the one to my ISP.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

...dave
