Thank you so much Edward.  I have solved the problem.  Diald is
working like a charm.

To solve the problem this is what I did, as per your suggestion:

1. commented most options in /etc/ppp/options 

2. using /etc/diald/connect script to chat instead of /etc/ppp/pon and
/etc/chaptscipt/provider, by appropriately editing the
/etc/diald/connect script.

3. restarted diald 

Now the connection is kept not only live as long as the packets are
there to transfer, the bytes are also shown in the log file.  Earlier,
as I reported, diald could not see the transfer though lot of packets
actually transmitted, so the log file showed 0 bytes.
