what is basically happening is, that your linuxbox is acting as a
router: for a router to be able to funktion, it needs 2 IP addresses.
the SLIP on your box is actually simulating a connection, that actually
doesn't exist, but that catches all the outbound traffic. as soon as it
receives something, it tells diald to initiate a chat session to
establish the connection to the other host.
you can see that quite nicely, when you do a netstat -rn, when the linkl
is down and also when the link is up.
