Paul,

Your Windows set-up has DNS set to a non-local network address - this
will cause a dial-out. I use 'named' on the Linux server for my
customers systems and have no trouble. Surely you are using 'named'?
Your resolv.conf file has your local nameserver set to 10.0.0.1 - mine
has that line set to 127.0.0.1. Set your Win98 to point to 10.0.0.1.

Is Samba running on your Linux server? If so set 'wins support = yes' in
the smb.conf file.

What system authenticates your password when you log in? Win98 usually
uses encryted passwords - Samba can be set to handle encrypted
passwords. You said 'whenever I log in ...' Is the Win98 box looking
elsewhere for a password authentication server? If it is quick to log in
then this is unlikely to be the problem.

Winxx generates lots of netbios traffic. All this must be 'ignored' in
diald's 'standard filter'. My file has 10 separate lines of 'ignore ...
netbios'.

Mail programs - Outlook, Netscape etc have settings to check their mail
server for new mail every xx minutes. Either disable the checking, or
point then to a local mail server. I have used sendmail with good
success.

When shutting down Netscape it will try and dial-out to close its link!!
Try adding 'ignore tcp tcp.fin' in diald's 'standard.filter' - got this
from a previous post in this group. Don't know if IE does the same.

There's a few ideas to try!

Hope that helps.
