You can use any number you like as long as it doesn't conflict
with anything else you might run, or want to run in the future.
Low port numbers (in the reserved space <1024 and just above)
tend to be used all the time. The high port numbers (48000-65535)
tend to be used for masquerading. I tend to go for around 10000
but there's no particular reason :-).
You don't need to enter it in /etc/services if you don't want
to. If you do you can refer to it by name rather than just by
number but diald doesn't care - it just binds and listens.

The only time diald chmods the given fifo is if it has to create
it - which it only seems to do if a stat either fails or the
file is not a fifo. As long as the fifo isn't deleted by something
you should be alright. (Note: most distributions probably wipe
/var/run every time they boot. I use /var/adm/diald/%s which is
safe on my system)
