No, it is not normal!!
I do not know what is causing it for sure but try simply putting 3 name
servers in /etc/resolv.conf. If it is _really_ a timeout problem that
should fix it. I have used diald for 4 years this way. works like a champ.

If you were to do this you are hosed when you upgrade the system. Now you
have to remember that you modified it and fix it after the upgrade. Are you
going to do the same thing for ftp, etc??
