Nigel:

Yes I have and it took a while.  The script that is usually with diald 
starts with ATZ followed by other setup strings.  

BUT.  Most modems have a finite response time for the reset na dDO NOT 
BUFFER the remaining setup strings.

SOLUTION :  Two setup strings.  Duplicate the existing one as modem_init1$ 
and delete the Z after the AT.  Then put the M0 (zero) as the last 
coimmand in the string.   On the original modem_init$ remove everything 
after the Z.

Lastly duplicate and edit the line lower down in the script that sends the 
modem_init$ and send modem_init1$.  This has worked for me.  

It has proved very unnerving for me, when I am at a client site, to 
realize the modem is connecting but no sound is heard.  Most satisfying 
for the clients though.
