I guess the ethertap device more or less replaces the slip interface proxy
that was used with diald in the past. I still am not clear as to why
ethertap is preferred. Perhaps it works better with the newer kernels or
perhaps it is more efficient in one way or another.

Apparently yes, I am still using a slip interface with diald under RH 6.0
with kernel 2.2.5-15. matter of fact I am using the same diald-0.16 binary
that I compiled under 2.0.32, same configuration files, etc. I made
absolutly no changes to diald and it continued to work fine.
